Twitter tries to extend its reach to living rooms

Twitter is launching apps for Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Microsoft’s Xbox One, as the messaging platform tries to extend its reach to living rooms. The San Francisco-based company is revealing the TV apps ahead of its first screening of live US football this week, after buying global rights to the National Football League’s Thursday night games. The apps will show live-streaming video from Twitter. Alongside the NFL and partners such as Bloomberg News, there will be tweets, six-second videos known as Vines, plus periscopes, the informal live videos usually made by individuals on their smartphones… Twitter has been struggling to increase its userbase as it faces increased competition in social networking, from Facebook to Snapchat. The platform has 313 million monthly active users, compared with 1.7 billion on Facebook and 150 million daily active users on Snapchat.
