BMW launches a “premium Airbnb for cars”

BMW

BMW is preparing to become the first carmaker to launch a “premium Airbnb for cars” service, as the leader in luxury sales shifts gears from vehicle manufacturer to mobility provider. BMW’s move into peer-to-peer car sharing is the latest example of the automobile industry’s efforts to grapple with the prospect of falling sales if self-driving vehicles and mobility services proliferate. The German company’s new ReachNow initiative, under which BMW owners should soon be able to earn extra cash by renting out their cars, is being trialled in Seattle… BMW is also proposing another facet to its ReachNow initiative under which people would be able to summon one of its cars to their doorstep, and then take the wheel themselves or be driven by a chauffeur — a move putting the company into competition with Uber, the ride-hailing app.
