Lyft to rent cars to aspirant drivers

Lyft, the ride-sharing app, will now rent cars to aspirant drivers whose vehicles are not up to scratch, as part of a deal with General Motors to help it lure drivers from rival Uber. The Express Drive initiative is the first to be announced since GM invested $500 million in Lyft at the start of the year, taking a seat on the company’s board… GM is providing cars for the short-term rental programme as part of a broader strategic alliance with the start-up, which will focus on developing a network of on-demand autonomous vehicles… Lyft, Uber and other ride-sharing services are competing for drivers, hoping they will make the switch between apps when tempted by better rates… Under the terms of the Lyft-GM deal, potential drivers who do not own a car or whose car does not meet the requirements… can now apply to rent a vehicle for up to eight weeks at a time.
